Due to a family case of the flu, Dr. Alexander Parkhomov could not start the experiment until the late afternoon yesterday, so Bob arranged with Dr. Nikolay Samsonenko, head of the theoretical physics department at the Friendship University, to head to northern Moscow and fit in a visit to another LENR researchers lab. Bob says he will start a live document on the MFMP main site tomorrow, introducing this and capturing the whole experience with Dr. Parkhomov.
The big question is probably "excess heat or not?" well, Bob says he had to bow out of the experiment at 00:12 this morning to travel back from the eastern Moscow suburbs to his accommodation, leaving Alexander to work through the night running the rest of the experiment. He says that he made several verifications of measurements and processes and has captured the written notes from the experiment, so that when Dr. Parkhomov presents results, they should be consistent with what was observed real-time.
The way the data is capture simply does not allow for a real time understanding and therefore, one can only determine the result after collecting the data together and analysing it post run. Given that Alexander might have only finished the experiment after a full night and will have wanted to rest today, it may be some days before we have a result. The result though, either way, will be extremely significant for reasons Bob will share tomorrow when he has had a little time with his family.

A strong symptom of the death of an individual- as sure as stop of heartbeat, lack of breath, the total non functioning of the brain (but more difficult to be observed is that the individual ceases to make discoveries. Thinking and working for LENR is an excellent source of discoveries- however, the discoveries as such are rarely excellent. Most of the discoveries are not complete and not unambiguous, therefore a part of our thinkers try to make discoveries not in the
present + future but in the rich past of the field rearranging and re-interpreting the data. zif this trend is not exaggerated- no problem, however sometimes the past discoveries become selfish  and put obstacles in the way of new ones.
OK, we have been waiting for two discoveries yesterday,  when I am writing this (17.20 local time) it is still lack of information. 
At Moscow, Bob Greenyer had a very important meeting with Alexander Parkhomov ad he has assisted at an experiment or not. From Bob, I am waiting first of all a 5-7 words message- as "yet it gives excess heat" or something like that. Bad luck, the leader of the opposition was killed in Moscow yesterday- such events make bad waves. In 1980 when I traveled in Moscow
there was no opposition there and a simple rational analysis  could show there will never be one.
Bob Greenyer- has a tiresome travel, I will wait till 21.o exactly for his message. How is "vini, vidi,vici!" in English?

We had an other discovery coming from Rossi himself- it si about the role of heat in triggering the release of excess heat. Techno-gossip says this is in a way the Achilles Heel of Rossi's system, this was the technical cause of the divorce from Defkalion- ages ago.
Now Rossi was asked about the E-cats powered by natural gas and he spoke about the technical 
aspects, it is no heat=heat, the source matters:
Rossi says:
The problem is deeper and has its roots in the core of the know how. It is not a problem of heat exchange or of heat conservation. Otherwise, it could have been already resolved

I was very impressed about this and I was hit by a great question: 
- is this true for the Hot Cat too? The Lugano test and the Parkhomov experiments ( we will know more about them as soon as Bob Greenyear will tell!) suggest me that it exists a critical temperature around 1150 C- and that suffices to trigger the reaction. Therefore I hope that when such such Lugano-Parkhomov replications will become easy routine, somebody will test my idea to heat the reactor with no electrical resistors but by immersing it in molten tin.
And I bet it will work!

(Adage with an asymmetrical truth value - the first part is  a Law of Nature and Existence the second is valid in very different degrees - people of progress move faster than times, reactionaries of all kind try to stop times)

Internet, instantaneous, immediacy, all these sound  encouraging but I cannot  see two events of great interest directly today- the Parkhomov experiment is now in an initial phase probably and the good spirits of LENR take care that the reactor should not explode or the wires should not burn out. Anyway, we can hope that a massive transfer of DIKW from Alexander to MFMP takes place and that is only the pragmatical start of a long duration strategical collaboration.

I have no idea either if privileged people can see and hear how at Milano the LENRG people discuss with industrialists (these are also technologists like me, I guess)  how to prepare the World for the advent of the LENR Era. Rossi helps:  see below.

It is time to think more about LENR strategies- we need them. They will be never applied de facto- there is no central transnational leading LENR authorithy, ISCMNS has to be resurrected. For political parties, the Congress is the supreme authority (theoretically for the sake of the impression of democracy; will be ICCF-19 more than a feast of advanced materials science? For sure there will be good discussions re technology but who will apply the teachings  and how? 
A LENR strategy has chances to be used like a symbolic lghthouse- and will help in developing a holistic imagine of the LENR field.

Here is the issues jerarchy:
1st: work
2nd: complete the work
3rd: make the plant confirms for at least 1 year that it works properly, reliably, continuously, without chattering too much, or, better, without chattering at all: our work needs working plants, not chatters.
To launch the LENR will not be sterile chatters moreless theoretical: to launch LENR will be exclusively a commercial breakthrough. Without it every imbecile will continue to chatter for nothing and theorize about nothing.
4th: as you say, ” assuming the best scenario”, at the end of this year during which I will have sustained work turns of 16-20 hours per day, I will get rest.

5th: all the following operations cited by you are turf for commercial guys, not for me. Obviously we cannot talk on behalf of the Customer and cannot know what he will do about the issue you raised. All I know for sure is :
a- if the plant will respect the guarantees, the Customer will pay all the due
b- if the plant will not respect the guarantees, the Customer will not pay and the plant will be returned.
All the rest is TDA ( Tongue- Displaces- Air).

Michael Schneider:
The E-Cats are more compact than it appears. The reactors of the 1 MW plant have a combined volume of 1 cubic meter. All the remaining space is necessary for the heat exchange and the control system.
For 10-20 kW units I think the volume will be smaller than in traditional heating systems, while the volume necessary for the heat exchange is the same of any other kind of heaters, since it is a matter of heat exchange surface calculations, independently from the heat source.
All these problems are on the table of the R&D. The combination with ultra capacitors is interesting, but I do not think it will be something doable in a middle term.

Rossi is right, but things are going way much too slow. Why he still cannot tell about daily, weekly, monthly average COP value of the 1MW plant? He works indeed admirably hard but how many teams can he have at IH?

To continue where I have interrupted yesterday: we don't know the roles in the Hot Cat Opera.
Ni, Li, H, Al,?,?... I have already told you that  all the operas are the same (the tenor wants to make love to the soprano, but the baritone tries to prevent this). If Li is really essential than
perhaps the unique ingredient we can use is this nasty LiAlH4. But what is then the role of H -besides making high pressure (not measured in real conditions but causing explosions and harm.). Is the high pressure a necessary condition for the useful reactions? Our temporary ignorance goes so far that we have no idea that alumina is also participating in any way at the process, or we can make reactors from other, more refractory materials?
LIALH4 is difficult to manage and Svein Utne has written:

Excellent, but perhaps not radical enough. It seems the weakest link in the replication saga is the building of the reactor's body - this is difficult and time consuming. I think after knowing if the mixture used by Parkhomov- 1 gr. Ni powder+ 100 mgr LiAl H4 works- a first action would be finding a specialized unit for manufacturing good quality ceramic (alumina plus ceramic adhesive of optimized composition- selling tens of this reactors. Some ready charged with the active stuff, some charged only with nickel powder, some for trying alternative compositions.
Similarly it will be very useful to work out and standardize (in some limits) the calorimeter 
part of the device. 
I hope the electrical part- resistors can be made a strong link in the chain. For those who have problems, there is the alternative imagined by me- heating the  reactor with molten tin from 1000 to, say, 1300 C, nix electricity but perhaps it works. Rossi has studied a gas heated E-Cat too.
Tomorrow it will be a very important day of the Parkhomoviada- an experiment performed in collaboration with Bob Greenyer from MFMP. Following it, it will be easier to organize effectively and efficiently- the W.W. Replication Campaign.

I care about the new LENR ENERGY ERA and I know it will come, however my bet is that it will have a different name. It will bring plenty of cheap, healthy, tamed, well tempered energy in different forms sizes and shades. I had the privilege to witness the Information Era; now all I want to is to see the dawn of the energy era- the very first ray of warmth of the new sun. So many good friends of mine, from Gene Mallove to Mike Carrell have not lived enough to "be there when it happens"  I well know and apply the wisdom of 
"it's choice- not chance that determines your destiny (Jean Nidetch) and i dare to think that I made good LENR choices- in the very limits of my possibilities and impossibilities. It was not my choice that I could not work
doing CF and later LENR experiments. I was forced by fatal circumstances
(the illness of my son) to leave my leader of research position at OLTCHIM,
and I like industrial research not lab level studies. So my activity was reduced or extended (?) to trying to make what I was able to, from the results of many
fine experimenters. 
Today, after almost 26 years I am sure that working exclusively for CF/LENR with the best instruments and an excellent team- I could NOT solve the problem  Uncle Albert also could not solve it, if PdD  was a sine qua non condition of the tests.
One of the best papers intensely discussed - is the one written by my discussion partner Abd:
Lomax, A., Replicable cold fusion experiment: heat/helium ratio. Curr. Sci., 2015. 108(4).
It is about the central certainty of the PdD system, it is fusion but by an unknown mechanism- "who" does it? The certainty is rock-solid- however the story looks a bit like an opera in which there are no precise roles or a movie with a partially unknown cast. A mystery- as an almost fanatical problem solver I dont like mysteries.
Recently we also have discussed much about the cast/roles of the opera taking place in the Lugano-Parkhomov Hot Cat Alumina House. Who participates and who not?

The current LENR development scene is a complex one and difficult to understand. I have written a number of recent posts that attempt to grapple with this Gordian knot even as this complex issue was percolating through the grounds of my subconscious. In this post, I attempt to bring this issue into sharp focus in my minds eye to apply the analysis that it deserves. Here in this post, let us attempt to make sense of these things.

The fundamental issue is successful product development. Rossi set this stage when he declared in 2011 to prove LENR by bringing a successful LENR based product to the marketplace. Only by doing this would Rossi prove the viability of LENR as an important engineering and scientific topic.

But conceiving and building a successful commercial product is most difficult. Take Microsoft as an example. That elite industry dominating company has been trying to get into the mobile marketplace with a competitive product to compete with Apple's IPhone for a decade or more, but has yet to be successful. Even at this juncture, billions of dollars dedicated to new product R&D and acquisitions budget does not guaranteed success. Far from it, this most admired of companies, has endured nothing but well publicized embarrassment, and repeated failures.

Drawing insight from recent LENR history, let us remember that in order to offload the product development task from his long and encyclopedic list of product development concerns, Rossi farmed product development out to DGT. From the very beginning, DGT had a very confident yet fatally flawed approach to product development because of the nature of LENR at that very early stage. Because they had always fiercely protected their independence and management prerogatives, DGT never deviated from this ill fated strategy.

This strategy involved the development of dozens of dissimilar products that were to be based on a prototype that was configured by the engineers as a home heating unit.

DGT was to license this basic LENR technology and reactor design to ship engine builders, and aircraft and car engine manufactures just to name a few of scores of applications, but where was the LENR product design engineers to come from to develop these very dissimilar products. Only Rossi had any expertise and he was secretive and paranoid. Rossi was not disposed to train the DGT personnel or DGT customer design engineers necessary to do this wide ranging product development.

In those early times, Rossi's reactors self destructed far to often to allow the development of any commercially viable product, so Rossi and DGT parted ways. After this breakup, DGT looked to duplicate Rossi's technology and Rossi looked for a new product development partner.

In the due course of time, both these now bitter rivals were successful, with Rossi teaming with Industrial Heat (IH) and DGT out on their own with a home grown LENR technology that was both controllable and responsive. IH had a commercial product concept in mind, a concept that they had warm feelings about, and Rossi was perceptive enough to change his reactor design sufficient to eventually meet most requirements of that concept save control as demonstrated by an acceptance test, and the one megawatt industrial LENR power plant was born.

As IH shaped this product, the IH product concept became highly specialized to satisfy the functional requirements of their very limited American customer base. Being exclusively an industrial steam heat plant, IH reactor approach is ill suited as a generalized solution to any other segment of the energy market.

DGT suffered great disadvantage because of an ill fated product plan from their very beginning. They were doomed to eventually fail. There were no legend of trained LENR engineers to build all the LENR products that were needed to satisfy the needs of their varied customer base. Having said that, their R5 reactor did function as a LENR product demonstration tool. DGT was far more forthcoming both publicly and privately in revealing engineering and R&D details than Rossi ever was so there was sufficient data to base a judgment that the LENR R5 reactor in fact worked. Failure of DGT as a business does not mean that their prototype reactor was not functional. That reactor served well the LENR marketing function that it was designed to serve.

The world energy market is varied and requires an eclectic and vast ensemble of custom solutions. The key question that we as LENR product acceptance strategists must determine is what particular energy product is most likely to introduce LENR in the best light to the world.

I have made my decision even if it was an unconscious one. As reflected in one of my recent posts, I believe that the self charging lithium ion fuel cell would be most impactful to convince the world that LENR is useful as a power source for transportation including cars, planes, trains, and ships.

Each LENR company and LENR developer, has made their decision also. Black light power is developing a small scaled electric grid compatible generator. Brillouin is doing the same but on a larger scale. The Nanor of MIT is a designed to be a small electronic device power source.

The Pd/D or the Ni/H open source community does not have a product plan. This fact is incompatible with Rossi's wise strategy to produce a wizbang product to introduce LENR to the world. Like DGT, even if an open source reactor works, the open source community will not succeed in selling LENR capability to anyone.

Confidence is vital for LENR too.Then it is obvious- we have to work; unfortunately less obvious what and how to work. However, the originar big promise of the Founding Fathers, a new, powerful, supra-competitive fine source of energy, therefore we have to create this source or at least its victorious certainty. "It is almost ready, just wait a bit, with a bit  of Science, a ton of engineering and a few million of man-hours of work it will be overall and will supply with energy  everything, from countries to smart watches." 

You well know that just now, we are in an uniquely important stage of the work- replication via the method created by Alexander Parkhomov the results from the Lugano test - high density of power and energy- effect of long duration. It is a turning point in the history of  LENR.
In order to achieve confidence- this is a process not a  sudden change we have to give stories, good stories to the public world, thus the people will go with us and will be prepared for the coming implementation of the new LENR energy source.
Stories- that multimedia stuff: words, sounds, images, movement- it has to be information of high quality - 'fitness for use'- definition coming from the good old days of the Quality gurus- Deming, Juran, Crosby.  Quality defects of this LENR information can convert the stories from beneficial in counterproductive, from helping progress to building obstacles.
A detailed ordering is not easy to make, however I think we can put the defects of the information components of the stories in this ranking of decreasing harm: insignificant & useless, obsolete and worn out, partial false or biased, hyperbolizing, self-contradictory, iffy etc.
It will be difficult to sell an all-noble-metal story when the Sources will use for sure cheaper transition metals. Useful is one order more valuable than true- in ads  and in life in any case..

My thoughts and remembrances are meandering toward a a target > I hsve to answer the explicit and implicit questions of Mitchell Swartz who has criticized and added to the following slogans of my yesterday editorial:

"we have to advance from the omniscient PdD based mentality to the fast learning NiH based mentality;
-to abandon the mixing-all generalizing approach and to adopt the separating-specifics and distinguishing LENR from LENR+  "

Mitchell shows that:
- PdD and NiH have an interwoven history and science and that intermediary and/or hybrid species have been tested many times;
and asks that:
- how can I prove that LENR+ is existent and is a species different of Cold Fusion, LANR, LENR- also considering activation via illumination and magnetization. 

I will make the first part short and the second longer because I want to answer in a personal context- I let my thoughts wandering a bit because there are some ideas to discussed once.

In my own experience - in technology- hybrid species are not successful- combining the DNA of a mouse and of an elephant you will get at the best a lazy fat rat. I cannot remember about remarkable successes - as Niagaras of excess heat from these mixed systems- and as thinking mode they were as pure Pd D. Almost the same with PdD alloys, improvements yes, quality leaps of breakthroughs NO.
Much noise, usually yes.

Mitchell wants to know why I believe that LENR+ exists and why it has a relationship of Otherness with classic LENR. I have to confess that my understanding of the field has developed slowly_ I have learned from facts and people. However say around 1995- that's 20 years ago- I already had some quasi-certainty-guesses, a bunch of fragmentary truth that have lead me to what I believe today.

The main ideas: CF takes places in active sites the surface, the dynamics of the surface (of the metal) is a determining factor, CF is a form of heterogeneous catalysis, technological development will come before scientific understanding, the heat release phenomenon is NOT completely nuclear, it must be something else there.
The ideas were far from being crystal clear and the PdD system was eveluated as being of "mimosaceous hypersensivity" not unmanageable or technologically speaking, incurably ill.

Looking to what i wrote, shamelessly repeating things that are true but very personal. I am forced to ask, taking me as bad example: 
"why people are so desperately auto-referential?" 
that is why they are speaking all the time only about their very own ideas?"

Ssuddenly I remember the personal stereotype of my good friend  Iustin: 
"I have very few few ideas but those are well fixed" he says smiling. Iustin is one of the country best specialist in chlorine-alkali electrolysis, he is poisoned with mercury, has lost great part of his tooth. But he is strong and young, he is the General Manager of OLTCHIM. These are my best PVC years, Iustin and I travel together to Hungary, the Borsod Chemical Works for technical discussions. Iustin is admired for what he knows about electrolysis, I make a stunning discovery: in that factory the PVC production people and the PVC research people do not communicate and do not collaborate- envy and competition for money from innovations and for travels abroad. Like two hands not working together. Shocking- but may I ask , for LENR which is still in deep trouble is it normal for an oppressed community to be so conflictual, to convert differences in opinions, in open contradictions and wild disputes?

Years come and go, age and mercury are killing my friend after staying 9 years paralysed. What a smart, nice man he was- and he had lot of good ideas just said they are few and immovable!
But my ideas are so...sorry. you know, I have learned a lot from Francesco Piantelli about NiH and I know it is not like PdD, then I had the opportunity to learn from Yannis Hadjichristos about his system- to activate hydrogen and to make the metal receptive. OK, Rossi has never revealed something practical about how his E-cts work but he has used the magic word: "catalysis"- and this met my old almost forgotten prediction from 1991. He uses a catalyst for sure but there catalyst  is a problem of definition. Then the temperatures increased fast- and the surface dynamic
too! DGT spoke about the Debye temperature as the limit, only above it can be obtained serious energy densities it is about surface vibrations of crystals. 
High temperatures and it seems (seems?) the Lugano Hot Cat at 1300 C is a limit, in case than molten nickel cannot work. Or can it?
The best LENR classic performances are Watts of excess heat- your reliable NANOR was still not renamed KILOR- but the Hot Cat is challenging us- the world of LENR to believe, explain, confirm two incredibly high performances:
1 gram nickel and 12 mg hydrogen (and some 20 mgr lithium and 70 mgr aluminum also there, plus (or not!) some additives as iron oxide) In an alumina pressure vessel at  a temperature of1100- 1300 C deliver;
- power of 2000W (average)
- energy of 1.5 MWatthours in 32 days.
Alexander Parkhomov has proven excess heat, now he has to give quantitative data and prove long term work of his reactor.

You know I think LENR takes place in active sites on the very surface of metals, we have discussed this many times.
Classic LENR works mainly with pre-formed active sites, limited in number/density while LENR+ is based on a continuous generation of new active sites — it is a dynamic equilibrium between the active sites that are destroyed by the high temperature and the new ones that appear; the trick is to have many of these doing their task — a sequence of processes and reactions. The constructive side of the high temperature must be added to its destructive effect and this is the clue of the LENR+’s exceptionality and progress.

LENR+ is dynamic, LENR static. It is a quality, essential difference between them.

I would like to now get something on the open source record and protect the concept from patent trolls and  proprietary non disclosure. This concept is formulated to eliminate the complexity and control  problem that has been seen in the alumina tube based LENR experiments conducted by Rossi, MFMP and the Russians.
With the application of the combined talents of a select group of design engineers, it seems possible to design a self charging high effectuate lithium ion battery that can capture and transform its heat energy directly into electricity.
If a tube based reactor as we have seen demonstrated by Lugano replicators is configured in a thermal heat transfer loop to distribute hot between a hot end and a cold end, a cross flow of lithium vapor ions going down the tube in the hot to cold direction and a controlled counter flow of lithium aluminum liquid metal (melting point = 500c to 600C) travailing back to the hot end from the cold end.
Electric energy could be extracted  from the flow of both lithium vapor ions and ionized hydrogen nano-particles on there way from the hot end of the tube were the LENR reaction is occurring to the cold end where the tube is being cooled in a co-generation process  by properly configured electrodes in the flow path used to confine and direct the movement of the ionized vapor. A electrode target may also be required at the cold end of the tube to completely deionize the lithium/hydrogen plasma.
On the way back, electric energy could also be extracted from the flow of liquid metal returning from the cold end of the tube to the hot end using   Magnetohydrodynamic generation(MHD).
An MHD generator, like a conventional generator, relies on moving a conductor through a magnetic field to generate electric current. The MHD generator uses hot conductive plasma or a flow of liquid metal as the moving conductor. The mechanical dynamo, in contrast, uses the motion of mechanical devices to accomplish this.
In principle, any electrical conducting fluid can be used as the working fluid, and power generation has been demonstrated with a number of such fluids, varying from liquid metals to hot ionized gases.
The absence of moving machinery allows the MHD generator to operate at much higher temperatures than other power generation systems and, therefore, higher thermodynamic efficiency can be reached.
A key component of the MHD generator is the superconducting magnet, which produces the magnetic field necessary for the energy conversion process.  If we get lucky, the LENR process itself may create a degree of superconductivity in the magnetic coils of a elector-magnet as has been seen in LENR reaction wires in the LENR experiments of Celanti.
Efficiency greater than 65 – 70 % can be reached if a triple cycle, including an MHD generator, ion plasma to electricity conversion electrodes, and a CO2 turbine, is utilized.  Such a configuration could fit well into a transportation power source.
The electricity produced by the moment of electrically conductive plasma and liquids could be used to produce a self sustaining LENR reaction when of portion of that MHD generated power is fed back into a pumped stimulation of the LENR reaction at the hot end of the tube.

The coming days and weeks have the highest chances to be decisive. Replications - goood ones are Research of high quality- needing both creativity and discipline, and can have positive effect and impact.
As I have already told 8 successful replications will suffice to melt away the last traces of doubt,
will put a muzzle on the most aggressive LENR deniers.

What have we LENR-ists to do in support of our front-line replicators:

- we must go from the probletent mode to the problem solving mode;
- we have to replace wishful, idealistic thinking with realistic, pragmatic thinking
- we have to advance from the omniscient PdD based mentality to the fast learning NiH based mentality;
-to abandon the mixing-all generalizing approach and to adopt the separating-specifics and distinguishing LENR from LENR+ 

BUT what is the great task- to instill true content in all these noisy slogans and to put flesh on this skeleton of bare ideas. My duty- first.

The answer to this speed of adoption question is found in the details. 

From the very beginning, Rossi has had real and long standing problems with controlling his reaction, so he has been forced into a complex design plan that has enabled him to make reactor development progress. That path involves a (spaghetti code like) low power density reactor design solution that greatly increases the complexity and high initial cost on energy investment of his reactor design. 

A complex design is far less adoptable than is a simple design. This complex design will have a high rate of failure, need expertly trained maintenance personnel, be inordinately expensive to manufacture and to operate.

A simple and well controlled LENR reactor is possible to design and build. Such a reactor prototype has been produced by DGT by using electric arc stimulation of the LENR reaction.

The speed of adoption is directly related to the complexity of the design of the reactor. If someone can develop a simple LENR reactor that features high power density, and design simplicity the speed of that reactors adoption will be dazzling. The adoption of the complex Rossi design will be greatly impeded especially in the technically unsophisticated third world where LENR based energy is needed the most. Rossi's current design is a first world design that needs the energy of this reactor the least.
